About the Genetics Awareness Project (GAP)

Funded by the Life Technologies Foundation, Inc., the University of Miami’s John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) initiated the Genetics Awareness Project (GAP) to inform South Florida’s Black and Hispanic communities about the value of genetics and its influence on personal health. GAP is an educational program designed to inform the public about genetics while increasing understanding and awareness about…

  • the influence genetics has on your health
  • the benefits of discussing your family health history
  • the role of genetic research in preventing and treating complex diseases
  • the value of genetic research participation for your community and your family

Our mission is to actively promote awareness, interest, and involvement in genetics in South Florida’s Black and Hispanic communities. Through the GAP, we hope to develop and implement a genetic educational program in South Florida, and to conduct informative outreach events and activities to sponsor South Florida’s “First Annual Genetics Awareness Conference.” You can get involved in the Genetics Awareness Project in several ways:

  • Email the GAP team to set up a GAP educational session
  • Check the News & Events page to find an already scheduled educational session
